<div>
My third and final baby has outgrown this infant car seat. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Big man weighed in at 21 lbs 7 oz at his doctor's appointment last week and the seat only goes up to 22 lbs. So, while the baby in question was taking his morning nap, I swapped around and installed new car seats. I came back inside and went to pick this up this old piece of plastic to send it on it's merry "Konmari" way.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijbzQKYnggNpiRO979E29hovP_HWVCtEfwekT0bBsx92K_KE-8TM9bl7gohmAKH0PwH4iP5EQmjk29b1mVyTstwKJOuo5-_DJJySTq6-i4VQJpWbG9YOXvs6x0nDHRpagolPwOiBD-7Ok/s1600/IMG_20160414_130719%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijbzQKYnggNpiRO979E29hovP_HWVCtEfwekT0bBsx92K_KE-8TM9bl7gohmAKH0PwH4iP5EQmjk29b1mVyTstwKJOuo5-_DJJySTq6-i4VQJpWbG9YOXvs6x0nDHRpagolPwOiBD-7Ok/s640/IMG_20160414_130719%255B1%255D.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
But this piece of plastic fought back! Out of nowhere, my heartstrings got tangled up in that 5-point-harness and shot 70 mph down memory lane. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I saw Kevin, the human swing, fist closed tight around the Graco handle, rocking a baby to sleep while we talked with people after a dinner at his parents' house.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I saw Alexander, all strapped in for a road trip. He had been crying, but I finally remembered to put on Uncle Eric's demo CD and now he was quiet and listening intently. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I saw me and Kevin, sitting on a couch, taking turns using our feet and hands to rock the sleeping baby in the carrier on the floor. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I saw myself, arm through the handle, twisting my body back and forth to rock a baby while I chatted with friends after book club had been "over" for 20 minutes. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I saw Jacob, latched onto the stroller, cruising through the airport with Alexander in the seat in front of him.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I saw Christopher, rear-facing in the van, smiling and giggling at Jacob singing in the backseat. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This carrier brought all 3 boys home from the hospital, It has held my babies and kept them safe for almost 9 years. It's been a valiant little trouper. It's worn and old and it's time has come. But I'm not sorry to cry just a little. I have so much joy to look back on and this piece of plastic was certainly in the frame. </div>

An online search for an adaptive clothing solution didn't yield the options I was hoping for. I looked at onesies, but I really wanted something with shorts to it; something that came further down his leg to really circumvent the scratching. I didn't want anything really "long johns-y" or heavy though, because we live in Georgia and it's already getting warm here in April. Finally, I hit on a search term combination that brought me to T<a href="http://adaptiveclothingshowroom.com/">he Adaptive Clothing Showroom</a> and their "<a href="http://adaptiveclothingshowroom.com/childrens-back-zipper-one-piece-onesies-like-underwear/">Children's Back Zipper One-Piece Onesies-Like Underwear</a>"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's got all the right features for my situation - except - the price. Now, I realize $20 isn't terribly bad for a utility garment like this, but add in the shipping cost AND the time I was going to have to wait for it to get here if I didn't ante up another $25 for Priority Mail, and it just wasn't for me. I started looking really closely at the design, to see if I could find a way to sew something like this with what I had on hand at home. I had fabric, I even had snaps and zippers (which would be a pain to install, but hey). Then it hit me.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Christmas Footsie Pajamas! I could cut up the Christmas Footsie Pajamas!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My two oldest kids don't usually wear footsie pajamas, but I get them fun new PJ's every Christmas and last year was a footsie pajama year. I racked my brain and realized I'd put the kids' winter clothes in Christopher's (the 8 month old) closet. He was already in bed for the night, but I snuck into his room with my iPhone flashlight and dug those PJ's out! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Upon closer inspection, Alexander's PJ's wouldn't work because fleece is not the best warm weather wear, and the zipper went all the way down to the ankle. But Jacob's! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJq21sMXD3FqkICaVRik2q1PV5Zc7CDmzTWDBCQFtHmRA00vsfTyzqnUXD8wN6VgIoOLv_9ngavmL_D2DNUsgUN89qdjbMiiKC_GneixFkFXE6SG_nVCY_iZdp4Mn4w3rrg8N78vXcGcM/s1600/IMG_20151225_075720%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJq21sMXD3FqkICaVRik2q1PV5Zc7CDmzTWDBCQFtHmRA00vsfTyzqnUXD8wN6VgIoOLv_9ngavmL_D2DNUsgUN89qdjbMiiKC_GneixFkFXE6SG_nVCY_iZdp4Mn4w3rrg8N78vXcGcM/s640/IMG_20151225_075720%255B1%255D.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
Jacob's PJ's were perfect. A beautiful cotton jersey material. Zipper only half way down the leg. Covered in Santa Clauses and Christmas Trees but who cares about that?? I chopped those arms and legs off and had Alexander step into it with the zipper in the back. Zipped that baby up and Bam! An Anti-strip/Anti-scratch jumpsuit better than anything I found online! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGDgGkMjJRxdjsSj_LU7w0AbyXYEJsVw73eUz92CJkWyvbZqoZUN1jyEZ7hCtRCGyCoeYhGTkwArJK_yBzSMTWxn7kz6wQ6tMt1UTBTXIv6EyFXj1uKcb-gEW72DB6SSOmqpHYZkcQkOM/s1600/IMG_20160405_190725%255B1%255D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGDgGkMjJRxdjsSj_LU7w0AbyXYEJsVw73eUz92CJkWyvbZqoZUN1jyEZ7hCtRCGyCoeYhGTkwArJK_yBzSMTWxn7kz6wQ6tMt1UTBTXIv6EyFXj1uKcb-gEW72DB6SSOmqpHYZkcQkOM/s640/IMG_20160405_190725%255B1%255D.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
And guess what else? He LOVES the thing. I was worried that the neckline would bother him since I put it on backwards, but it hasn't fazed him a bit. He also seems to really enjoy the Christmas pattern on it. His rash is almost totally better and the past two nights, he's brought me the jumpsuit to put on him when it's time for bed.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div>
I recommend the cotton (jersey knit type) material and the Leveret brand item for the following reasons -<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
- Cotton is cool and light and sensory friendly<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
- Jersey knit won't really fray or unravel, so you don't have to hem anything. You just cut the arms off at the length you want, and cut the legs off about half an inch (or more if you want) under the end of the zipper.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
- The knit allows for give and stretch. Jacob's PJs were a 4T and they fit Alexander (who is 43 lbs) with room to grow. He could probably even wear a size 3T since the legs are cut off and length isn't as important.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
- Another perk of the knit giving and stretching is the collar. I mentioned above that I was worried the neckline would bother him because being on backwards makes it extra high. The knit has allowed the neckline to naturally shift forward and away from his throat (where it would definitely bug the heck<br />
out of him.)<br />
<br />
- The zipper on the particular item I linked to above only goes part way down the leg. I cut the leg off about half an inch under the end of the zipper and it worked great. Most other brands I've looked at in toddler sizes have the zipper all the way down to the ankle. You could use something like that, but you'd have to know how to shorten and reinforce a zipper (which I do know how to do, but it's a pain).<br />
<br />
- I've spent a lot of time hunting for sleep n play's (another name for footsie PJs) for Christopher lately so I can tell you that Leveret is the 2nd least expensive option for sizes larger than 6-9 months.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div>
- If you have an Amazon Prime membership, this item qualifies for Free 2-day shipping. (Free and quick is my favorite!)<br />
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
Hopefully this idea helps other families in similar situations. Gotta keep our kids comfy! </div>
<div>
Luck and Love,</div>

The error pattern is one in which the child says words or uses signs that in the past have resulted in the delivery of reinforcers but are not the correct word for the particular item they want at the time. Most often in scrolling, multiple error responses are emitted in a sequential fashion which may include the correct topography. <b>It is almost as if the student is fishing for the correct response. </b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">- <a href="http://mand.framewelder.com/page/?template=error_correction">Mand Training - Pennsylvania Dept. of Education </a></span><br />
<br />
And now in English -<br />
Scrolling is when a child uses the wrong word or multiple extra words when trying to ask for something. This usually happens part way into therapy, when the child starts to get the basic concept that you expect them to do<i> something</i> (sign, speak, tap dance??) in order to get what they want but before they have enough practice to be able to recall the correct word/sign when they want it. So they pull up the word or words that have gotten them the most success in the past. It's not the best case scenario, but it's a step in the right direction. It can also be cute as heck.<br />
<br />
At the moment we're focusing more on PECs with Alexander and moving directly from PECs to vocals but for a while he was using a handful of signs pretty consistently. His main ones were candy, show, car and drink. And just about any time he wanted a drink, he'd start at the beginning of that list, with the intent to work his way through. Our protocol was to stop him and help him get it right but his little hand jive was pretty adorable. (And it was the best feeling to see him trying.)<br />
<br />
When Jacob first started saying "goodnight" he started off by just saying "t" and then, later, "night, night." We were so happy about it, though, that he started saying "t" for everything, because he thought it was the magic sound to get our attention (which, let's be honest, it pretty much was - what sound is sweeter than your child asking to go to bed?) It was fairly amusing teaching him to differentiate the request for "night, night" from the requests for candy, milk, etc. One or two experiences of being lead to his room instead of handed an m&m and he figured it out quick.<br />

Alexander was an "athlete in training", I volunteered to run a station, and Kevin, Jacob, and "Beepaw" (Kevin's dad) came to play, too. All the athletes and ait's were assigned a buddy from the high school to help them participate in the events (and Alexander's was great!), and Alexander had our full entourage following him around most of the time. The ait's got their very own "Itty Bitty Olympics" to do and here are our boys at a couple of the stations.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHt7pfD_XotEfTFh6n15rfTNEA5741iZaNflHIL9lrBmFGdXVwD7k1ERs5ImJ9f1nC3Ykp2N3Pa7YK8ClonQn2qbhp9HMKRYmg-cLIisrdlxb-Bh_qNJpXleTTrTb3rgcUJnrB-FXmDqg/s1600/velcro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHt7pfD_XotEfTFh6n15rfTNEA5741iZaNflHIL9lrBmFGdXVwD7k1ERs5ImJ9f1nC3Ykp2N3Pa7YK8ClonQn2qbhp9HMKRYmg-cLIisrdlxb-Bh_qNJpXleTTrTb3rgcUJnrB-FXmDqg/s1600/velcro.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
Alexander thought we were thoroughly inefficient to stand back and try to throw the balls at the target. He demonstrated the practical approach by walking up to the bullseye to place his "dart."<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/4JGK1UQwSNQ?rel=0" width="560"></iframe><br />
Later we took the boys to the bounce houses, which of course they would have stayed at forever if we let them.<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/KY7bZU3jjcM?rel=0" width="560"></iframe><br />
Then I insisted on attempting to get the boys' faces painted. I had the girl do a heart on my cheek while the boys watched and Alexander thought it was so cool, he sat perfectly still while she painted his sun.<br />

Jacob reached up and smeared his before it dried but he sat still while it was going on, too.</div>

Such a great day! We love our itty bitty boys!Mama Scribblerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03876149835929932753noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2580597658517270126.post-15478171632485522202014-02-27T17:07:00.001-05:002014-02-28T08:45:13.644-05:00Green photo wall<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I both pinned and facebooked this awesome entryway a few weeks ago. I had been going over some photos of loved ones who have passed away in recent years and felt the need to display them in more than a photo album. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.kellehampton.com/2013/02/photo-collages-choosing-photos.html"><img border="0" src="http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh296/kascryder/Fall%202012/blog1_zpsd247304b.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With this inspiration, all clean and bright, I set to work with frames and spray paint I already had on hand. While I really loved this pretty off-white version, I wasn't sure I would be able to do justice to the "collage", and didn't want to put unneeded money into it until I had proof of concept. Hence the green. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIUARCrjd9e5plD51XQQaXtHgeOd0Qh3HMJ7xkl6tYAQm3V4Fa9JpUWwowGtshDX514PBPENqlEjOJcoKZ81C4HeqAO8aCrXOMW8O7DZRfNx8IYpJ_hUJ8dn4K-1TibNJmA2C4sd4-xL0/s1600/photo+(4).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIUARCrjd9e5plD51XQQaXtHgeOd0Qh3HMJ7xkl6tYAQm3V4Fa9JpUWwowGtshDX514PBPENqlEjOJcoKZ81C4HeqAO8aCrXOMW8O7DZRfNx8IYpJ_hUJ8dn4K-1TibNJmA2C4sd4-xL0/s1600/photo+(4).JPG" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The thing I <i>did</i> channel my budget into was more of these little beauties.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007RKFDXU/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1"><img border="0" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81jSPpLKz-L._SL1500_.jpg" height="320" width="222" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like, a lot more, like, a real "lot"; the biggest lot Amazon would let me buy (16 small sets, 32 medium). The idea of even attempting to nail hooks into the wall for all these frames just wasn't an option in my head. And after my success <a href="http://brownscribbles.blogspot.com/2014/02/a-couple-crafts.html">hanging plaques last week</a>, I knew these strips would be the minimal-hassle solution. The things are literally a snap. You snap the two sides together, apply to your frame, take 30 seconds of pressure to get the wall piece to adhere and then, if you wish, you can snap off, snap on, swap out, reorganize your layout to your heart's content. Depending on the weight of your frame (mine all weighed much less than the max. recommended per strip), I've found there's even a little play in how specifically you line up the connection. Need to move a frame about half an inch or so in any direction? Just pull it off and line up less of the little teeth. I'm sure that doesn't make sense, but buy a set and experiment for yourself. I also love that there's no annoying -daily- straightening of frames required when you use these. Your picture will stay securely locked at the angle you chose to hang it. (My little home decor heart might just burst!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Selecting the perfect photos became the most time consuming part once I had the hanging strips in hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1rhxLQTJGgfWlJrK9KEER64TaVhZHNbRbucgJ2KWnTOHpL7fLOfvTDYTeyKCKQl7vqQuRGnp8uTJI-ntMJvWdhb5fi971FCQkhy5SEKGcXBKd1QR0DiU59cDgIn35MSYr_eQh_QJqXww/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1rhxLQTJGgfWlJrK9KEER64TaVhZHNbRbucgJ2KWnTOHpL7fLOfvTDYTeyKCKQl7vqQuRGnp8uTJI-ntMJvWdhb5fi971FCQkhy5SEKGcXBKd1QR0DiU59cDgIn35MSYr_eQh_QJqXww/s1600/photo+(2).JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
Which is how it should be.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRcTyXCk-wgmMg3VnmxPUrmoT4WXZnyr25Uf4cKAeCzqKigYXhQOyzOlYUY4AV2T8dusZq2JChBmM29fIZ3gP_-3EqHhnTR1AheXT9ZONJXd-zPo3m1pedS4X6ue0XkPPXQMBybsueIc4/s1600/photo+(3).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRcTyXCk-wgmMg3VnmxPUrmoT4WXZnyr25Uf4cKAeCzqKigYXhQOyzOlYUY4AV2T8dusZq2JChBmM29fIZ3gP_-3EqHhnTR1AheXT9ZONJXd-zPo3m1pedS4X6ue0XkPPXQMBybsueIc4/s1600/photo+(3).JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Minimal practical issues. Focusing instead on too many moments to showcase.</div>

I based it roughly on <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/60165344994417368/">this etsy wreath I found on Pinterest.</a><br />
<br />
I really liked the sunflowers but I couldn't find white ones anywhere so I went with daisies instead. And I still have the wooden "B" that just never got around to painting itself. But this is the finished wreath I have up when it's not Christmas time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7rEOOktdN9zVqppO-4vhToO8t_OifvBnpNZRY4iPpi9RP3Rc8ckuXBBKfVLN2YUyoxI0njYlv6xeJ-sxzcsQAyUduWe2XURaf0WsyV2PwE0SYT2GtlxLRpAB-v79MD-3Rrw-7qymC3fQ/s1600/door+wreath.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7rEOOktdN9zVqppO-4vhToO8t_OifvBnpNZRY4iPpi9RP3Rc8ckuXBBKfVLN2YUyoxI0njYlv6xeJ-sxzcsQAyUduWe2XURaf0WsyV2PwE0SYT2GtlxLRpAB-v79MD-3Rrw-7qymC3fQ/s1600/door+wreath.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yep, all year except December. I figure the daisies can work for spring, summer, and fall. I like that the burlap can be sloppy. The grapevine was brown originally and after I had the whole thing put together, and hung up, I realized my door was brown. Regroup, green spray paint, dry time and done!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And here are my sorta kinda finished silhouette plaques. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My craft room/master closet is a pit and I was soooo tired of looking and I NEEDED these to be on my wall. So printed card stock had to do. And in that same vein of impatience to get them done and up, I also discovered <a href="http://www.target.com/p/3m-command-damage-free-hanging-medium-picture-hanging-strips-4-ct/-/A-13713744#prodSlot=medium_1_3&term=picture+hanging+strips">3M picture hanging strips</a> that day. I really didn't want to have to bother adding sawtooth hangers to the back of my plaques, so I did some web searching for a decent idea and this popped up. ---></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/315cuuQVaWL._SY355_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><img border="0" src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/315cuuQVaWL._SY355_.jpg" height="200" width="193" /></a>They're like a combo of velcro and snaps (don't know how else to describe it), and I'm a big fan of the Command brand sticky strips in general. No nail holes! I don't know how long they've had these out but I definitely didn't see them last time I was shopping for picture hangers or a never would have bought that huge pack of these puppies. </div>

But now - I know. :-)</div>

<br />
I graduated from my massage school program on December 20th. I finished my license application last weekend and am now just waiting for it to be processed and approved. Once I'm licensed, I'll be applying to massage envy and doing in home massages (referral based) for personal clients. I'm also planning on getting a massage chair and traveling around to all the various waiting rooms I've sat in for Alexander's therapies. People in waiting rooms need massages. They just do. If I can get any of the businesses to pay me, great, if not, I'll just set out a tip jar and make sure no one leaves without my business card.<br />
<br />
Kevin is still working at Fiserv. He's working on a big project right now that had him working odd hours before the holidays. He was able to take off a couple of days to go for training in Alexander's feeding protocols at Marcus Autism Center and he worked extra hard at home while I was super sick over Christmas and New Years.<br />
<br />
Alexander, as noted above, just finished his feeding program (which was 8:30am-3:30pm 5 days a week) at Marcus Autism Center. He's finally getting all the calories and nutrients he needs by eating food instead of just drinking Pediasure all day. His current protocol is for 900 grams of pureed foods and 250 grams of nutrient rich drink but we'll be going back for outpatient visits and trying to work up to table texture on all 16 of his acquired foods. While he was in the feeding program he wasn't attending kindergarten or any other therapies outside of Marcus. We were able to schedule his feeding therapy sessions around the Language and Learning Clinic sessions there so he was able to continue in that and will be finishing up with that program in early February. He's made some progress in verbalizations but we're still working and waiting for him to really start talking. Today was Alexander's first day back at kindergarten and he didn't have any trouble getting back in the groove after his feeding therapy absences.<br />
<br />
Jacob was shuffled around quite a bit while Alexander was in the feeding program and I was finishing massage school. He was able to continue in preschool the whole time, though. Today was his first day back after the Christmas break as well and he had a good day. He's picked up quite a few more words, it's just a matter of getting him to use them. I'm really looking forward to being able to work with him more specifically now that I'm done with school myself.<br />
<br />
And here is a video of Alexander having a home "Marcus Meal." My mom took the video while she was here before Christmas for my graduation. Like she says, this was taken toward the end of the meal, and he wasn't cooperating as well as he usually does, but it does show him eating, and we're all super happy about that! (And really, I'm kind of dull and not doing the best job at my ABA therapy duties in this clip, but well, this is the video we got.)<br />

I just recently realized I was needing some new pictures of the boys, so when my friend Amy Dawkins (professional photographer) offered me a photo shoot, I jumped on it. I wasn't expecting more than one or two half way decent photos (the lighting was bad at the park and the boys never sat still for more than 0.5 seconds at a time). So I was psyched when she sent me a good 30 pics! These are my favs from the bunch. Thanks again Amy (and Lee for watching <i>their</i> three boys while his wife and I chased my two all over Ft. Yargo Park.) </div>

But I wanted to share this email his teacher sent me this afternoon because it made me happy. I'll try to update with pictures again soon...<br />
<br />
"We had a fabulous day! This morning seemed a little crazy trying to get everyone organized and make sure everyone had what they needed. Alexander seemed a little nervous at first this morning and had a few moments where he just wanted to be held, which is quite alright. We love him!!! He did really well I think for his first day in a new school and he really took up with Mrs. [parapro] =)<br />
<br />
We are looking forward to the school year as well, we love Alexander already and can’t wait for a fun year =) We have a wonderful class and a great group of parents that support us.<br />
<br />
Thanks so much! See you soon!<br />

Well, it's going GREAT! I love the school, I love the teachers, I love the little hand exercise ball they gave us in our supply package. I love the course material, I love the teaching methods, I love the low tables that keep us from hurting our backs. I love the books, and the overhead projections, and the little quizzes every morning that help us prep for the big tests. I love the people, I love the building, I love the short distance it is from my house. I love my mom for coming to watch the boys during July, and I love Kami for coming to be my nanny for the rest of the year. It's all love, baby.<br />
<br />
And now for a boys update (I never remember to do this on their birthdays!):<br />
<br />
<b><i>Alexander</i></b> got an extension on his Marcus Autism Center Language and Learning Clinic services. They gave him another 6 months so he'll be going until February next year. He's also scheduled to start kindergarten on August 5th. (He's turning 5 on Monday can you believe it??) Because of the Marcus extension he'll only be going to a half day at school but I'm looking forward to seeing if it helps with his progress. I really liked his teacher when I met her at our IEP meeting back in April so I'm hopeful things will come together nicely.<br />
<br />
Alexander still says "Go" verbally when he wants to play. He also has picked up a few modified signs that he uses consistently when we give him a chance. (Mommy has to be on top of things and not keep reading his mind.)<br />
Sign list:<br />
Candy (index finger tapped at cheek)<br />
Drink (fist to chin)<br />
Movie (hands rubbed together)<br />
Popcorn (like this)<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi93d7SCTl_gESEkSD6thCpormJ5qp2Y8oeM8qceHHgBRFAqRJSnwXzWDVK1hXA4YgejbCf5qVTs5FjOnk1c1tQG5D7Ewig_r7K7lUZOPg3boMRpZdz17UW-GGYWy6GOWqLPnUR_ZhbcGg/s1600/G03Ag1nUnPdI-XHf5l5FFg_m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi93d7SCTl_gESEkSD6thCpormJ5qp2Y8oeM8qceHHgBRFAqRJSnwXzWDVK1hXA4YgejbCf5qVTs5FjOnk1c1tQG5D7Ewig_r7K7lUZOPg3boMRpZdz17UW-GGYWy6GOWqLPnUR_ZhbcGg/s200/G03Ag1nUnPdI-XHf5l5FFg_m.jpg" width="200" /></a><br />
<br />
<b><i>Jacob</i></b> turned 3 on July first. We had a fun party for both the boys a couple of weeks ago at Lunar Golf at the mall. (This video will be hard to see but it shows Jacob playing golf.)<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/013WSjlJ2w8?rel=0" width="560"></iframe>
Jacob finished up with Babies Can't Wait back in June (it only goes til they turn 3) and he's slated to begin preschool in a couple of weeks. He'll be going to the same preschool Alexander was going to because he's way behind on talking (although he does say a few words) and he's a little behind on some social and fine motor skills.<br />
<br />
Kami and I are going to do some home "preschool" type activities with both of them, like, we'll be continuing the color of the week and stuff. They've really loved all the color sensory bins and baths so far.<br />

With help from my mom, I created a nice big chalk board wall for Alexander's room that we'll be using for "school" activities.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMopRX9P2JOsEanMYnJdhDG4arRmCNeDoEvVfnmDDgcFIV6RtMKCCzXYkkSeWi9nhAYBuDr3X9UmHYL379IgcSPYYiM5cI5CBsZ4crmHOknMzag9BDJcthKVQGzSgn0thHQ-pY-fSAv54/s1600/chalked.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMopRX9P2JOsEanMYnJdhDG4arRmCNeDoEvVfnmDDgcFIV6RtMKCCzXYkkSeWi9nhAYBuDr3X9UmHYL379IgcSPYYiM5cI5CBsZ4crmHOknMzag9BDJcthKVQGzSgn0thHQ-pY-fSAv54/s640/chalked.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
I primed the black side with magnetic paint so it can be like a real chalk board. The other side is just for drawing cuz I ran out of magnetic primer. Both boys really like drawing and playing with the magnets. The first thing Alexander did when we handed him the chalk was start drawing smiley faces.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Browsing around on Pinterest the other day, I rediscovered the blog Play Create Explore. Specifically I came across her <a href="http://www.playcreateexplore.com/p/color-of-week-series.html">color of the week series</a> and about flipped my lid (in a good way). The extra bold, bright colors really grabbed my attention. I just love all her tutorials for variations on sensory bins for each week. And I think my favorite idea (one of those, "I think I know why I didn't think of it, but since someone else tried it first, I'll totally give it a shot, cuz it sounds awesome" ideas...) is <a href="http://www.playcreateexplore.com/p/themed-baths.html">Color Themed Baths</a>! </div>

We had a really good time, in the rain! This last picture only shows the tiniest portion of the people that were there. The crowd was massive. We filled the Atlantic Station block! It was great to see such a big group and feel the camaraderie abounding. Another big thank you to everyone who supported our family and Walk Now for Autism Speaks! </div>

Alexander did a once over of the shiny new equipment and then made his normal beeline for the swings. He was perfectly content to sit in his swing as Kevin and Jacob ran around with our kite.</div>

Occupational therapy for a child his age involves working toward "age level skills" in drawing, writing, self help skills (to name just a few). His therapist, Miss Cheri, has a big mirror on one side of the room and they use markers to practice drawing on the mirror. Up to this point, the drawing practice has been getting him to imitate lines in specific directions (up, down, across, etc.) and some circles and squiggles. Miss Cheri always makes her circles into smiley faces after they're done, but it's not part of the objectives. And last week, when prompted to draw a circle, Alexander drew this.<br />

Miss Cheri had started cleaning up before she remembered to take a picture, but this was originally a full circle smiley face. Getting Alexander to imitate anything has always been a challenge. But this one he picked up on his own. I'm so proud of my happy boy.Mama Scribblerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03876149835929932753noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2580597658517270126.post-473134100095289772013-04-15T11:13:00.001-04:002013-04-18T16:26:01.733-04:00Gala<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For those of you who don't know, Kevin and I won tickets to the Big Splash at the Georgia Aquarium, which is a fundraiser event for the Marcus Autism Center. It was this weekend and we had a great time. For some silly reason I didn't bring a camera with me but here we are all dressed up ready to go.</div>

Kevin wasn't feeling well but we both had a better time than we were even expecting to. The food was yummy, the entertainment (<a href="http://michaelisrael.com/2012/">Michael Israel</a>) was phenomenal and the spirit of honoring and giving to the autism community was palpable to point of tears (from me). </div>
